There
is no doubt that the Nigerian Entertainment Industry has come a long
way from what it used to be. With particular focus on the music
industry, we cannot help but observe the tremendous growth that has
taken place over the years as Nigerian music and artistes are now seen
as heavy weight forces to be reckoned with in Africa and even overseas.
Nigerian songs now rank on international charts with a good example
being, 2Face’s sixth studio album, “The Ascension” being ranked on
American music magazine, Billboard Magazine as the 12th selling album in
the world as at the time
of writing this article.
Two of the
biggest names in the music industry are Wizkid and Davido. Both young
and extremely talented, these artistes draw their fan base mainly from
the youths and have been pitched against each other both by the media
and their fans as to who is better. They have had everything from their
songs, awards, shows, ambassadorship deals and even girlfriends compared
against each other just to see who is the superior and bigger artiste.
For a long time now the war has continued to rage and even more recently
we had the twitter beef that occurred between the two acts making fans
realize that they shouldn’t be expecting a Wizkid and Davido
collaboration anytime soon.
Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, Wizkid
is one Nigerian artiste that his grass to grace story has not continued
to delight the heart of many as his combination of hard work and talent
has made him a household name across the globe. His rise to fame began
with his hit song ‘Holla At Your Boy’ but Wizkid has since gone on to
produce chart topping songs that has kept many a fan crooning or
grooving to his songs. He has clinched many national and international
awards in his career including Promising Artiste of the Year (Dynamix
all Youth Awards 2009), Next Rated (The Headies 2011), Best African Act
(MOBO 2011), Best Artist in the Africa/India/Middle East Region (MTV
Eurpoe Music Award 2011), Artiste of the Year (The Headies 2012),
African Artiste of the Year (Ghana Music Awards 2013) alongside others.
Davido
or Omo Baba Olowo as he is fondly called by his fans on the other hand
is the son of a billionaire father, Chief Deji Adeleke. Born in Atlanta,
Georgia and christened David Adedeji Adeleke, he relocated to Lagos at a
young age. His courtship with stardom came with the success of his
single “Dami Duro” and there has been no stopping the young star ever
since. He has won a BET Award, a Kora Award, a Channel O Music Video
Award, a Ghana Music Award, a Nigeria Music Video Award, two MTV Africa
Music Awards, two African Muzik Magazine Awards, three Headies Award,
four Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA), and two Dynamix All Youth
Awards, among others.
One
may begin to wonder that with such successful careers just some few
years down the line in music industry, how can one crown the bigger
artiste of these two entertainers. After all when we talk awards wise
for instance, they both have almost the same number with one BET to
their names, one Channel O Music Video Award, one Ghana Music Awards,
two Dynamix All Youth Awards, and three Headies each. Although Davido
has four NEAs, Wizkid is at his heels with three NEAs to his name.
Wizkid easily makes up for this fall behind with a MOBO award and two
City People Entertainment awards while Davido is not be outdone with two
MTV Music Africa Awards. In this light therefore, it is hard to say who
is bigger.
The comparison has gone on to include their lifestyles
with blogs and magazine comparing their love lives in terms of who has
the prettier or sexier girlfriend. Not left out is their fashion sense
as well with fans debating on whom is the better fashion icon of the two
stars. As usual, there has been no consensus to as to who has the
prettier girl for beauty is in the eye of the beholder for instance
while the issue of fashion is what one makes of it. There songs have not
been left out for either with their songs pitted against each other. Both artistes have been to hold their fort as they both keep churning out chart topping songs.
In
truth, one can’t say who is better or bigger in Davido or Wizkid as it
more an issue of personal choice. Rather than cause more controversy
between the two stars, fans should dance to whose music gets them
nodding to its tune or should croon along with whichever of them gets
them grooving. Take for instance on the international scene, Beyonce and
Rihanna are always pitted against each other. According to Billboard
for instance, Beyonce has more album sales while Rihanna has more
digital track sales. Beyonce has more top ten songs while Rihanna has
more number one hit songs. Just the same way Wizkid has more years on
Davido in the industry; Beyonce has more years than Rihanna. In the end,
it all boils down to a decision of personal choice of whom you prefer.
Music taste differs from person to person and there is no doubt that
these Davido and Wizkid are talented in their own rights and would
continue to do well for themselves both home and abroad.
