Dancehall is a popular type of music originated in the late 70s in Jamaica.it is also known as Bashment. Dancehall is the mother of hip hop and owes its name to the spaces in which popular Jamaican recordings were aired by local sound systems characterized by a deejay singing and toasting (or rapping) over danceable music rhythms.
The rhythm in dancehall is much faster than in traditional reggae, sometimes with drum machines replacing acoustic sets. Some persons are of the views that dancehall lyrics are crude or “slack”, because of its sexual tones.Like its reggae predecessor, dancehall eventually made inroads onto the world music scene.
Shatta Sark |
Some years back in Ghana, Dance hall was regarded as a rascal and noisy music composed by violent people who called themselves musicians, but Shatta Wale, who I call the dance hall Jesus took reggae Dance hall and added a splendid flavor to the genre to produce a perfect aroma for Ghanaians. Now,
For the past one year,Dance hall music has remained the latex trend Of Ghanaian music. Everyone can relate to it , especially the ghetto youth.Even my 82 years old granny uses some lingual jargons such as,"faya kyant kul","wataguan","bomboklat","seeen"
"Adat" and "mideya so" when she's having a conversation with people. This should tell you how influential Dance hall music is in Ghana now.
Now, BET Award winner, Sarkodie, who was the talk of town and the pillar of Ghanaian Hip hop before the Dance hall Commando,Shatta wale took over,is doing his possible best to overthrow reggae dancehall music and bounce back to reclaim his position.Incase you guys don't know, Sarkodie has tried various strategies to Overtake Shatta Wale but seems all his brilliant strategies failed.First,he composed a song for Shatta wale but that didn't succeed his mission. Then He tried using Ghanaian media which also failed. After his Song "Press release" didn't push him through,He then decided to use the Ghanaian Government, which generated the song "Inflation".I personally thought "Inflation" would have succeeded , but after some few days of media hype, Ghanaians spat on it and treated it like an Ebola patient. Funny enough, Michael Owusu Addo, as known in real life has tried his possible best but, it seems 90 percent of Ghanaians are madly in love with Shatta Wale. As Sarkodie posted on his Facebook page"M3gye wo gal, Sarkodie ft Shatta Wale.I Usually don't hype my own songs but this one dier Hmm!", He actually thinks featuring Shatta Wale will bring an end to his misery. lol funny Sarkodie. Frankly speaking, I think Sarkodie should save his energy and effort on a different Occupation like Okyeame Kwame and Lord Kenya, or better Still start spitting in lingual because, he can have millions of collaborations with Shatta Wale, but that won't change the fact that his time as the best Artiste in Ghana is over. Hence he can't overthrow Reggae Dancehall music. why am I saying that?
Reggae dancehall music is a religious genre of music.it has it own followers and believers who believe in their messiah Haille salasie. Unlike hip hop or other genres of music , Reggae dance hall music has massive committed lovers, who will never change from the lifestyle and the inspiration Reggae Dance hall music impacts in them.I can bet you that 70 percent of the people who were then Sarkodierians are now lovers of Reggae Dancehall music, including me.
Secondly, Reggae Dance hall Artistes are perfect and spectacular when it comes to free styling. I don't know,if they get the inspiration from the marijuana but frankly speaking, their experience and level of free-styling is amazing and outstanding . Unlike sarkodie, who is poor and weak when it comes to freestyle, Shatta Wale is a wizard, when it comes to free styling. No wonder most of his songs are based and related to his personal and social life.Just last two weeks, there was a misunderstanding between Shatta wale and GhOneTV which The Dancehall commando composed a dissing song, "F*ck you GhONE" within a short period of time. Shatta wale used his amazing level of free styling to compose other songs such as Artist of the year, letter to chatter house, letter to kaakie and many more which makes him unique and perfect in the presence of his fans and Ghanaians in general. One funny strategy about Shatta wale Ghanaians don't know is that,he intentional holds grudges with people,so he can get a song to compose. lol clever shatter wale,no wonder he has millions of songs. Well, for sarkodie to over take Shatta Wale and Reggae Dancehall music in general, he must be a free styling tycoon. I mean what's the essence of you being called an Artist, if you can't freestyle? He better start practicing or better still, he can contact Jay Town for Rehearsals.
Personally, I think reggae Dance hall music has come to stay in Ghana. It will take a miracle to substitute this music genre with a different genre because,Dance hall in Ghana now is really competitive.Though Shatta Wale is the pillar of the trend now, there are tight and dope Reggae Dance hall Artists who keep on pumping dope lyrical vibes and styles in their various Arts to make the genre competitive.Aside of the popular Reggae Dancehall Artistes we know; Samini,Stonebwoy,Jupiter ,IWAN,Raskuku,kaakie,MzVee,....there are the likes of Rudebwoy Ranking, Baruso Spatta, Episode, Natural face, Bastero, Rasheed Metal, Konkora, Joni Blaze, Ak Songstress and many others who keep on blazing up Nima, Fadama, NEwtown, Korlegornor , Zongo and most of the Islamic communities in Ghana; Any of the aforementioned names can overtake Shatta Wale if he doesn't work hard to maintain his grounds. Unlike hip hop and hip life music, which is not Competitive enough because of laziness and imperfection which made Sarkodie to Stand tall, Reggae Dancehall is competitively 100 percent.
Finally, Dance hall music is very energetic. It takes a more energetic person to call himself a reggae Dancehall Artiste.Ghanaians love to see more energy when it comes to Stage performance.Ghanaians prefer an Artist who's whack in terms of lyrical content but crazy when it comes to stage performance to an Artist who's dope in lyrical vibes but boring and poor on stage. Now, the question is,who is more energetic and crazy on stage? Is it Sarkodie or Shatta Wale?
Again, In this era of music, it will only take a miracle for Sarkodie to bounce back as the best Artist in Ghana. The only thing that might survive Sarkodie in the industry now would be his awesome and classic visuals (music videos). what do you guys think ?
